What’s the problem?
Because our campaign against a third runway has been successful so far, with the Lib Dems PREVENTING the Conservatives from expanding the airport in that way in this Parliament, the pro-expansion lobby are coming up with new ways to increase capacity at Heathrow.
Runway Alternation is what happens when the planes land on the north runway for half the day and then switch to the south runway for the other half of the day. It allows residents from Barnes and Putney westwards to enjoy several hours a day without the constant noise of aircraft coming into land. Schools can plan outdoor sports days free of noise; families can plan outdoor gatherings or weddings.
Ending Runway Alternation would mean more planes flying over the same neighbourhoods, daily.
The airline industry has been piloting “more flexible” use of the runways to relieve pressure spots –residents are concerned that amounts to breaking down runway alternation by the back door.
What are we doing about it?
The Liberal Democrats are committed to a policy of NO expansion at Heathrow, and that means we want to see rigorous Runway Alternation preserved.
What can you do to help?
Join our campaign today to show the Prime Minister and the airline industry that Heathrow airport is big enough already, and that subjecting residents in West London to more noise misery is unacceptable.
